Being an Ocean Athlete is so exciting and fun when you wake up to glassy waves with power to surf or sup or 20 knots of side shore winds to explore with a kite or a sail. The hard part is when it is flat and cold and the ocean is not very inspiring while giving it the surfer gaze . One needs to look creatively at these conditions to find that challenge that will energize you . It may be to paddle through an inlet with wind in your face and the current running in your direction and eventually your energy begins to build after each additional paddle stroke. It may be to circumnavigate an island that is close by and challenge yourself with a longer distance than you are used to paddling. Being a dedicated waterman or waterwoman is not glamorous and most of these athletes are certainly not attention seekers . You have to go out there and push yourself. In my opinion some of the best ocean athletes are the most humble because they put the work in.
If you have always been a good surfer but have not ventured into the other facets of Ocean Sports consider getting a paddle board or learning to kiteboard. If you have been paddle boarding for some time venture into prone paddling. The more options you have the more adventures and challenges you can create. It is always challenging to be a beginner again . Your environment will help dictate some of your decisions as well. Being an east coaster it is so necessary to look at all the options of ocean activities , and over time you realize their are so many ways to play in the ocean that one needs to be grateful of living next to the seashore. Paddle sports always offer a challenge on a daily basis no matter what the surf is doing or the wind is doing.
One thing for sure is you can always find a fresh challenge. One of the great advantages to challenging yourself is that it leads to better fitness. Ocean fitness is all about using the ocean and the water ways to staying fit and building strength both mentally as well as physically. Staying fit is so vital for most people to be successful in other facets of life. When you are struggling with something in life and feeling blah and you cant find the energy just force yourself to get out in the ocean and do something. This exertion always helps you relax or gives you a calming effect that is so needed at that time.
Like Robert Herjavec of shark tank says ” If you want to do great things in life , you have to have great challenges. I have friends and fellow Ocean Athletes that have achieved great challenges of endurance by training and then competing in the Catalina Classis or the Molokai paddle race which really is a great accompolishment. Just remember you can start challenging yourself with small steps and get stronger by the day without over whelming yourself. Challenge yourself to be consistent in your approach. One quote that says it all is “Don’t limit your challenges , Challenge your limits” By J. Johnson.
